About Jodhpur

Jodhpur "The Sun City" was established by Rao Jodha, a king of the Rathore clan, in 1459. It is named after him only. Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India was earlier known as Marwar. Jodhpur is the second biggest city in Rajasthan. Jodhpur is split into two parts, the old city, and the new city. The old city is divided by a 10 km long wall surrounding it. The new city is outside the walled city. 

Within, holds an imposing fort on a low mountain of sandstone hills, about 125m above the surrounding fields. It is Invincible! And brave in its organization with time! The city lies at the foundation of the hills. The clear demarcation between the old and the new city is visible from the fortifications of the fort. 

Jodhpur is a very attractive tourist place. The view is beautiful and mesmerizing. Jodhpur is known as the "Sun City" because of its gorgeous and sunny weather everywhere the year.

Major Attractions of Jodhpur

Jodhpur city has several beautiful palaces and forts such as Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhavan Palace, and Rai ka Bag Palace. Other attractions of Jodhpur include Government museum and it's a wonderful Umed garden.

Mehrangarh Fort

Rested on a 150m high hill its sprawl is the most terrible and luxurious fort in Rajasthan. Rao Jodha established it in 1459 but after rulers of Jodhpur have also attached to it over the centuries. A circular road leads to the from the city 5 km below. Battle scars of cannonball hit by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate.

Umaid Bhawan

Maharaja Umaid Singhji who made this palace was attached with western styles so he ordered the services of a well-known Edwardian architect, Henry Vaughan Lanchester, a decent equal of Edward Lutyens to build 347 roomed Umaid Palace.

Jaswant Thada

On the way downhill from the fort, on left is Jaswant Thada, the beautiful marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. His son Maharaja Sardar Singhji established the Taj Mahal of Marwar in the memory of Maharaj Jaswant Singhji II of Jodhpur. The cenotaphs of initial Maharajas and Maharanis are at Mandore.

Janki Mahal

The Jhanki Mahal, from where the royal females watched the official procedures, in the court, today houses a rich gathering of the royal cribs. The beds are furnished with golden mirrors and pictures of fairies, elephant, and birds.

Marwar Festival

The most famous Jodhpur festival is the Jodhpur Marwar Festival. It is organized every year in memory of the warriors of Rajasthan. Marwar Festival of Jodhpur, Rajasthan was formerly known as the Maand Festival.

The festival is organized in the month of Ashwin. Ashvin (Aswayuja) is a Hindu month during September-October month. The Marwar festival in Jodhpur, India is celebrated between the full moon of Sharad Poornima. It continues on for two days.
