Asansol is a metropolitan city in the Indian state of West Bengal. Asansol is the second biggest and most popular city in West Bengal. It is the district headquarter of Paschim Bardhaman district after Kolkata.
Asansol is the 39th biggest urban agglomeration in India. According to a 2010 survey, Asansol has 11th rank among Indian cities and 42 in the world in the list of 100 fastest growing cities. Asansol is a combination of two words "Asan" and "Sol". "Asan" is a species of tree that generally grows thirty meters tall which is found on the banks of Damodar River. So, Asansol is a city on the border of Damodar, it has minerals in its land.
Asansol is located on the lower "Chota Nagpur Plateau" which occupies most of Jharkhand, between the Damodar and Ajay rivers. Asonsol is administered by the Asansol Municipal Corporation. The Assensole municipality was approved in 1885 but it started functioning effectively in 1896. Asansol Municipal corporation has 106 wards.
Climate: There are hot and dry summer and cold chilly winters. In summers temperature is 40 C with dry hot air blowing which is known as "loo" while in winter temperatures go below 10 C. The Monsoon Lasts from June to September.
Road: The grand trunk road runs across the subdivision and NH 14 connects Asansol with Odisha. Daily bus service is available in Asansol to Kolkata and destinations like Siliguri, Malda, Siuri, Purulia, Midnapur, Kalna, Burdwan, Digha, Kalna, Berhampore, Kiranhar etc. There are also many private buses, ola cabs, taxis available for travel nearby in Asansol.
Railway: Asansol railway station is the division of Eastern Railway zone. This is one of the oldest division on the Indian Railways. All the trains are connecting with north India and linking with Asansol including Sealdah Rajdhani, Howrah Duroto, Howrah Rajdhani, Sealdah Humsafar Express, Shalimar Duronto, and Yuva Express. Asonsol has great connectivity with cities such as Jammu, Ludhiana, New Delhi, Amritsar, Lucknow, Dehradun, Kanpur, Allahabad, Gwalior, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Ranchi, Patna, and Dhanbad.

Recently the Airport Authority of India gave nod to start commercial flights for 6 routs in West Bengal.
